ANNAPOLIS, MD – In a game that lived up to its billing as a mid-season classic, St. Mary’s Annapolis secured a dramatic 11-10 overtime victory against McDonogh on Tuesday afternoon. The win marks a significant statement in the highly competitive MIAA A-Conference, often cited as the toughest high school lacrosse circuit in the nation.
Senior attacker Nick Wehmeyer proved to be the hero, dodging from behind the X and firing a low-to-high ripper into the top corner just two minutes into the sudden-death overtime period. St. Mary’s defense, anchored by goaltender Erik Volf, was instrumental in the fourth quarter, stopping three consecutive man-up opportunities for the Eagles to force the extra frame.
“This league gives you no nights off,” St. Mary’s coach commented after the celebration. “McDonogh is a phenomenal program, but our seniors showed the poise required to win at this level.”
The victory catapults St. Mary’s into the conversation for the top spot in the upcoming Inside Lacrosse national rankings.
