MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – The sands of Manhattan Beach provided the perfect stage for a dominant display of athleticism as the Mira Costa Mustangs opened their 2026 season with a resounding 5-0 sweep over Redondo Union. In what is widely considered the “South Bay Derby,” Mira Costa showed exactly why they are the perennial favorites in the CIF Southern Section.
The Mustangs’ top pair, Charlie Fuerbringer and Savannah Standage, set the tone early with a clinical 21-14, 21-12 victory. Their chemistry at the net and strategic shot placement forced the Seahawks into numerous unforced errors. Mira Costa’s depth was on full display as their 4th and 5th pairs also secured straight-set wins, proving that the Mustangs’ talent pool runs deep this year.
Tactical Mastery in the Sand
Beach volleyball at the high school level has evolved significantly, with teams now utilizing advanced defensive shifts and “option” plays that were once reserved for the professional AVP circuit. Mira Costa’s coaching staff highlighted the team’s improved transition game from defense to offense as the primary reason for the sweep.
“The wind was a factor early on, but our girls adjusted their serving angles beautifully,” the Mustangs’ head coach noted. “Beating a rival like Redondo 5-0 is a great confidence booster, but we know the competition in the playoffs will be even tighter.”
Looking Toward the State Finals
With the victory, Mira Costa solidifies its No. 1 ranking in California. The Mustangs are now eyeing a deep run in the IBVL (Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League) championships. As college recruiters from powerhouse programs like USC and UCLA watched from the pier, it was clear that the future of NCAA beach volleyball is currently being forged on these local sands.
